GREY PLAY JAMMERS CLOSE by Al Steiger

January 12 - Conn. Jammers 39, Conn. Grey 30

The Grey started out with an early lead helped in part by the efforts of Captain Kerr and Eddy Carr. They actually looked like they knew what they were doing with excellent chair speed and crisp and accurate passes (from where this came I haven't a clue). The Jammers were certainly surprised because we had made sure the Grey had the absolutely slowest and weakest chairs we could find.

Well once the Grey's adrenaline started to wear off and the arms started to burn, the Jammers put a few points on the board and held the lead for the rest of the game. The game was actually very close, with the Grey down by 8 at half and eventually 9 at the final buzzer.

After the game we had a team photo and each team exchanged shirts and hats. The Jammers also thanked the Greys for donating a new wheelchair which is due in next week.

Was there also a glimpse of the not too distant future?... Just imagine a group nursing home for the Grey where afternoon tea consists of a keg of beer, and the weekend exercise is wheelchair rugby. Could this be the next natural step after Old Boys???

Anyway, it was a fun time for everyone involved and we're already looking forward to the next rematch.

ANNUAL AWARDS BANQUET

The arrangements are all set for an evening of wine and merriment on Saturday, January 26, at the Waverly Tavern in Cheshire. If you have yet to do so, send Tony Johnson your reservation by e-mail to johnsaw@nu.com. If you need details or directions, contact Dean Jorgensen at djorgensen@pioneeraero.com.

THE END OF AN ERA

Guz is still looking for volunteers to help him clear out the Smokatorium in New Haven. God only knows what you'll find on the back of the kitchenette shelves. Let Mike know if you can help out either the weekend of January 19/20 or 26/27.

Jan 26 (Sat.) - 9 am to 1 pm. Apartment tag sale to get rid of furniture, stereo stuff, and everything he doesn't want.

1 pm - Moving some stuff to his brother's basement right across the river and packing up his car to take stuff back to NJ. Party during and to follow. This can also be done during the tag sale to save time.

Jan 27 (Sun.) - May need a little help with odds and ends and clean up. Remember - Mike needs helpers, customers, and partiers, and you can play more than one part. Please call him at 772-0271 or email mguzzio@aol.com if you can help out.

SPRING SEASON

Let's hear it for the Match Secretary. Guz is putting the finishing touches on the spring card, to include matches against Berkshire, the Long Island Lobsters, the Lion Kings and New York AC. Franconia is May 31 - June 2. The schedule will be published soon.

JOHN FALATYN MEMORIAL MATCH

Thanks to all the Connecticut Grey ruggers who turned out to offer condolences to John's family and pay their respect to John's memory. Guz, Joe Scan and Brendan Coffey are organizing a memorial rugby match in the Kingston area between the Grey and a combined Mid-Hudson/SUNY New Paltz side (or something like that). Right now we're looking at May 18 as a possible date. Again, as soon as details are firmed up, we'll pass them along.

In the meantime, the Executive Committee of the Connecticut Grey RFC is proud to announce that the Freight Train Award has been renamed the John Falatyn Freight Train Award in John's honor.

THE ROOSTER FLIES!

Ian "Rooster" Roberts has finally gotten his green card, meaning he can leave without fear of not being allowed back in. Rooster is heading home to Barbados next month for the first time in six years. He has been instructed to come back with ideas for a 25th anniversary tour to Barbados for the winter of 2004. Stay tuned, mon.

Hope to see you all at the Awards Banquet on the 26th.
