ANNUAL AWARDS BANQUET

As if the word hasn't reached you yet, in case you were in the mountains skiing or in the islands catching some sun over the last week, or if you're like Bud and don't have any neat place to go, or don't get invited anywhere, or are forced to spend most of your time at home locked in the basement so that you don't scare any of your kids' friends away when they come over, the Annual Awards Banquet is scheduled for Saturday, February 27th, somewhere around 6:30 p.m. This year's event will be held at the Waverly Inn in Cheshire. For those of you who were around about three years ago, this is the same place where we had our annual banquet postponed (about three hours) due to a power outage. And, those of you who were there remember what an open bar and a three hour delay for dinner can do to spark up what sometimes can be a routinely dull evening.

Anyway, if you haven't already received your invitation, please contact Ed Robinson. According to the invitation and attached information, the fee for this year's event is $45 per person payable (preferably) in advance. Plenty of good food and drink as well as the awards and dancing will be on hand so don't miss what is normally billed as the "social event of the season" (again for those of us, like Bud, without a life). Responses are due by February 5th but don't let too much time lapse after that date as seating is limited. Also, get your ballots in for the 1998 awards - remember - your vote counts.

CATCH THE GREYS ON THE WEB!!!!!

Yup, we're millennium bound and thanks to the efforts of Dean (sizzlelean, mean bangers and beans) Jorgensen, who has spent an undue amount of personal (and company) time developing our web page, we are world wide weady. Information on the club, the roster (in case you forget who you play with), the schedule, some limited pictures and a completely sanitized version of the Hourglass (unfortunately censored for our G rated readers - even the word "damn" is cut) is all available on the web page. Take a moment and visit our web page that can be reached at http://www.pioneeraero.com/cgrfc/ - hey, it don't cost nothin' and you might just learn something - like when our games are. There are also links to other rugby related sites like Rugby News. You can also contact Matt Godek or Rugby Imports and order gear on-line. We have to really thank Dean (Winston) Jorgensen for the nice job in getting this set up for us. If you have any comments or suggestions (I've already asked for links to the Penthouse pictures) contact Dean.

FIVE NATIONS UPDATE

Starting Saturday, February 6th, the Five Nations matches will begin. Where do you want to spend every other Saturday from this weekend forward until our season starts???? In the basement like Bud??? In the garden like Strein??? In the bathroom for hours with your most recent copy of Boys' Life like Seeger??? Or, with the boys - watching the games and pouring back a few pints??? OK, I know it's a tough decision but if you DO decide to come out and watch the games, they will be televised at the Irish American Home Society in Glastonbury for a nominal fee. Single games are $10.00 and two game viewing is $20.00 - or all 8 matches for $60.00 (must be paid in advance). Proceeds go to the "Buy Ireland A Decent Team" fund. The schedule for 1999 is as follows:

Feb. 6th Ireland/France & Scotland/Wales 9:15 am
Feb. 20th Wales/Ireland & England/Scotland 10:00 am
Mar. 6th Ireland/England 11:00 am
Mar. 20th Scotland/Ireland & England/France 10:00 am
Apr. 11th Wales/England 10:00 am

All double-headers shown back to back.

1999 - GREY 20th ANNIVERSARY YEAR

There has been some discussion about the 20th anniversary of the founding of the Connecticut Grey RFC and this year will represent that milestone in a club's history where we acknowledge the commitment and perseverance of a group of fine, dedicated individuals that pull together as one keeping the spirit of rugby alive and fostering teamwork and pursuit of victory on and off the field for two whole decades. Yeah, right!! Actually we are celebrating the fact that for twenty years (forty seasons - and then some) we have been able to gather enough bodies together on a weekend day to play ball - that in and of itself is and achievement.

But seriously, the Greys are- right now - the premier Old Boys team in Connecticut and possibly throughout New England. Why just the other day I was looking over the Connecticut Yankees schedule for the spring and believe it or not, we are playing more games than they are (and I'm only counting the tournaments as one game). We, the Executive Committee have big plans for this year - such as a fall tournament in Connecticut and a very large Anniversary Ball (yes, we do have big balls) a raffle, a turkey shoot, a slam dunk contest, a marathon, an Iditarod and a beauty contest (using only the participants from the Iditarod). However, these events just don't happen on their own and we will be looking to the membership to help with the planning and execution of these gigs. Please contact Tom (Commodore) Flynn or Ed Robinson if your desire to serve on one of the soon to be organized committees. Your assistance is greatly appreciated.

DID YOU EVER WANT TO SPEND A COUPLE OF WEEKS IN DENMARK????

Well, here's your chance. You see, these friends of Elaine Guzzio (you know, Magellan's wife), have to come to the States for a wedding this summer and would love to swap homes with someone in Connecticut that has a place in the Madison area. There are two locations in Denmark, one Copenhagen and one on the coast (water temp in the Baltic is usually a sauna-like 50 degrees that time of year). Based on the mailing list that I have, this kind of eliminates all of the Greys (except maybe Jeff Bouvier-van Dyke), but maybe you know someone in the area that would just jump at this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. If you or anyone you know would like to slap on the old wooden shoes and gaze for hours at a statue of a naked mermaid - just give Mike (Zebulon Pike) Guzzio's wife, Elaine, a call at work (973) 716-3469 or home at (973) 228-7751. Guz thinks this is a real deal since his lost week in the hash bars in Amsterdam. He also thought it would be great to go to a place where the currency was beer. It took him awhile before he realized they used Kroners not Coronas!

Along the same theme, Joe Bordieri is also looking to swap his summer chalet in the former republic of Yugoslavia for a secluded cabin that's a little more quiet and located at least twenty miles from the nearest military installation. Please write to him, the address is:

Sgt. Joe a.k.a. "Joe the Mole" Bordieri
