"I had a linguistics professor who said that it's man's ability to use language that makes him the dominant species on the planet. That may be. But I think there's one other thing that separates us from animals - we aren't afraid of vacuum cleaners!"

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING RESULTS

The 1998 Annual General Meeting was held on November 22nd at Kenny G's in Wallingford. Unlike past years' AGMs there were ample bodies to fill at least two tables and consume a relatively large expenditure of beer. With 14 members in attendance (that's almost a full side) the meeting kicked off with a review of this past year's activities - mostly the game results as provided by the match secretary Dean (more English than Tony Blair) Jorgensen.

This past year the Grey played a total of 25 games with a win/loss total of 13/12 - a winning year(?). A complete listing of this past year's field endeavors can be found further in this newsletter.

Now, to get to the meat of the meeting. The elections weren't much of a surprise but there are a few changes. The results are as follows:

President:  Tom Flynn
Treasurer:  Sandy Woodard
Match Secretary:  Dean "Furby" Jorgensen
Social Secretary:  Ed Robinson
Captain:  Ed Carr
Vice Captain:  Jim Facey
Corresponding Sec.:  Linda Tripp

Only one position was hotly contested - Vice Captain - and voting took place by way of a "secret ballot." It's a good thing the elections were held early in the meeting as the consumption factor played heavily in the discussions that soon followed. Tom Flynn continues his reign into the 20th anniversary year and the focus of our efforts in the upcoming months will be to address the activities (plan and schedule) for the anniversary. It was mentioned that a committee or committees be developed to help spread the workload (and blame) over a lot of members in an effort to get everything planned - completed.

E-MAIL BIG SUCCESS

At the present time 43 members now receive The Hourglass through e-mail. This is not only an excellent and fast way to get correspondence out to all but it is also saves us money. Based on an average year with 12 newsletters, the savings by not having to snail mail 43 letters comes to over $150.00. Just think, that's a half keg of beer and a six-foot Subway with chips or the complete CD collection of Tito Fuente! If and when you do get "connected" let us know your e-mail or Internet address and we'll add you to the list and chalk up another $4.20 per year in savings for the club. Addresses can be sent directly (electronically) to johnsaw@nu.com.

1998 SEASONS REVISITED

The Connecticut Grey enjoyed a very satisfying 1998 season on the pitch, finishing with a record of 13 wins and 12 losses. The schedule included traditional weekend trips to Baltimore and Franconia. The club was also well represented at Saranac Lake in the Can-Am Tournament Over-40's Division by a pick-up side of Greys and friends. The Connecticut Grey walked away winners of the Connecticut Cup, Old Boys Division, and the Berkshire Autumn Rugby Festival. Two high notes: The Grey turned up to every match - home and away - with a full side, plus. This is a tribute to the on-field leadership of Joe Scan and Donnie Brancard. Also, our home match organization was the envy of Old Boys rugby throughout the northeast. We had great facilities courtesy of Tom Flynn (both PNA Park and Woodhouse Avenue), a superb local in Kenny G's, and the best Old Boys referee working the game today in our own Jeff Bouvier. Know that Jeff is as much appreciated by our opposition as he is by our own club. Baltimore, Franconia and Berkshire all ask for him by name when organizing their referees' panel. For the record:

AROUND THE FIELD

Well, it's that time of year again when the fat man makes his list of gifts and disbursements to the notable Grey members in recognition of their fine performances in 1998.

To new Captain Ed Carr - a comb OOPS! I mean a can of Nair and a tattoo that says "Goodyear" to go along with the white-walled head.

To John Kerr - a roll of dimes so that when the game is over and he wants to continue complaining about the bad calls - he can call someone who cares (it may take awhile so he gets a lot of dimes!). That and an autographed picture signed "Your pal - Kenny G".

To Trunks - a pair of scissors to cut the umbilical cord attached to Donny.

To Mike Fotos - a US Postal outfit with the name "Claven" sewn on it.

To Ian "Roosterman" Roberts - a catcher's mitt, an air sock, a wind gauge, contact lenses with cross hairs etched in them and a barrel of glue. That and a Barbados-to-"MARK" translation book.

To Dave Yanik - a report card that says he passed!

To Bill Strein - A year's subscription to Martha Stewart's Living.

To Tom Roncaioli - a can of kidney beans -NO, THAT'S NOT FUNNY ED - AND IT NEVER WAS!!!!

To Steve Carr - three big brothers to take his boys to their games so Steve can play with us (and I don't mean Carr brothers).

To Daryl Garrison - the complete library of Treat Williams films.

To Mike Guzzio - a Rand-McNally Atlas and a car equipped with the Northstar system and a special button on his computer that lets him know when he has sent a stupid e-mail request.

To Bud Harvey - John Marinaro's address and a plane ticket to California (one way).

To Steve Jones - a pass that allows him to get out of playing in the backfield in any game of his choice.

To Joe Scan - two digit numbers for his jersey - looks like another year at wing!

To Dean Jorgensen - a seat on Parliament.

To Mike Rowan - another year's supply of weight gain and a job at Loctite where he will receive all the latest and greatest jokes - just like John Kerr!

Chuck Schutte - the name and address of that little bugger from Albany Law that dissed him at Berkshire.

Drew Truncali - membership on the New York Old Boys team.

Phil Tufano - anything he wants!!!!
