GREYS TOTAL POINTS WINS AT WORCESTER

The first game (games?) was held on the 12th at Worcester in a round-robin, three team format with Worcester and the NE Bolts. The game started late which forced a three, twenty-minute half format that really shouldn't upset any old boys team - but it did. With the Bolts as the Grey's first opponent, the Greys fell short against the Bolts on points in the first 20 with scores by Joe Bordieri and Bud Harvey. Apparently Bud ran really fast - not sure if this was due to his tight underwear or the fear of being tackled. In the second 20, the Greys dominated Worcester who had to give up many of their premier players for their club side 'A' match that was to follow. Scores by Joe Scan and Kevin Conners added to penalty kicks and conversions by Brancard to give the Greys the overall total points lead, 27 - 12. The event was billed as a memorial to one of the Worcester players who took his life with the proceeds of the fund raising going to his wife and children.

GREYS STAY DRY IN NY, DOWN MID-HUDSON

Drier weather, better footing and the ability to recognize the opposition helped the Greys trample Mid Hudson at New Paltz, New York. The Middies (or formerly Mudsons) assembled a real rabble of Danbury, Middies, SUNY New Paltz and SUNY Stony Brook players but were no match for the well stocked (22 plus players) Greys. The score at the end was Greys 34, Mid Hudson 10. Greys apparently dominated the entire game and several tries were scored but only one name was provided for the tallies and that was Roosterman Roberts with 2 tries. Good games were turned in by Mike Guzzio, Jim Facey, Dave Yanik and Joe Bordieri. On a sad note, Joe B. suffered a torn biceps muscle and will miss the rest of the season with this injury. Mike Kosila also suffered a separated shoulder and will miss the next few games. Also injured were Rob Spaulding (that's what happens when you only play once a year) and Mike Fotos (these aren't as serious). Nice social afterwards with showers and sauna at Lake Williams and a cookout out at the Scanderosa.

"SIXTY NINE IS DIVINE" "SIXTY NINE IS DIVINE" "SIXTY NINE IS DIVINE" "SIXTY NINE IS DIVINE"

Or so the chant goes. In actuality, it is DIVINE!!!!!! I base this opinion on the results of the game against NYOB on the 19th at "le swamp" in Wallingford. The score, 69 - 12 looks really great but in reality it doesn't feel as good as it should. Why? Because they only showed up with 7 players and we ended giving them six Greys and playing 13 on 13 (then 12 on 12 after the warm-up injury to Chicky). The Greys, sporting a relatively new line up were able to run through, around and over the NYOB (actually Grey) backfield. At the end of the first half it was 32 - 0. Without substitutions and some other minor injuries to the Grey lineup (and a late arrival by an NYOB player) the Greys had to last the second half playing 12 against 14. Not a problem as another 37 points were tallied against 2 tries for NYOB - one following a mugging of Steve Tenenbaum who went down on a kick with 3 NYOB players in pursuit and the rest of the Greys admiring his attempts to fend them off whilst standing 50 yards away. Needless to say, Steve was very vocal about the lack of support. He also expressed his displeasure about us having to play 12 against 14. Can't list (or even begin to remember) all the try scorers but some good runs and scores by Joe Scan, Ed Carr, Don Brancard, Kevin Conners, Steve Tenenbaum with 2 tries and Tony Johnson with 3 tries (and you thought I was playing golf for the past two weekends). Don Brancard also tallied numerous conversions and there was never an attempt at a penalty kick. Special thanks to those Greys who played the entire game for NYOB - it didn't appear to many of us that you were having fun.

DUES ARE DUE

Once again it's time to ante up and pay dues for the Fall (and in some cases last Spring's and last Fall's) dues. Playing members are required to pay $75 per season with social (newsletter receivers only) members paying $35 for the entire year. Please see Sandy Woodard at any game or call him and mail it to him. (No you can't e-mail your check, Chick). But, don't worry, if you don't see him, HE'LL FIND YOU!!!!

IT'S THE LAST THING THIS WORLD NEEDS

Another male Carr. Our congratulations go out to Steve and Linda Carr as we welcome Kevin (with probably some real Irish middle name) Carr. We understand Steve has been overplaying the "baby's arm" joke of late and is a little jealous over the young lad's unit. He must get those genes from Linda's side of the family. Good luck and hope to see you and the new addition soon. You can even bring Linda too!

NEXT GAME

The next game is Saturday, October (yes it's October already) 3rd against Berkshire somewhere in Western Massachusetts. Please call Joe Scan or Don Brancard to inform them of your availability. WE NEED PLAYERS FOR THIS GAME. This is the last game for a couple of weeks as we have an open weekend over Columbus Day weekend so get your licks in this weekend.

AROUND THE FIELD

Some things are somewhat funny and others are just hilarious - it all depends on how much you drink! Anyway, during the half-time break with NYOB Steve Tenenbaum herded the front line together (Guzzio, Tamburri and Flynn) to explain to them that what we really need this next half is for them to break out quickly and cover the sides as soon as the ball comes out since we are down two players. We can only imagine the expressions on the faces of these three "speedsters." As Guzzio put it "it was like cows watching a passing train." It's not Steve's fault, he doesn't really understand what "front row" means.

After the "practice" session in the beginning of September, Jeff Bouvier (yeah, Jeff the Ref) showed up. To Practice???? No, just to take a walk and then have a few beers. Upon returning from his walk Jeff mused "that was a $400 walk!" It just so happens Jeff came upon a canoe for sale and bought it - he would have been better off practicing with us. Later, at the bar Jeff was questioned on the proper call on an apparent infraction during "lifting". Jeff responded, "I cannot speak intelligently about that." A rugby rule??? And our ref can't explain this??? Something's wrong here. But, we all know that Jeff does have some problems with the definitions of some of the rules anyway. However, we are in a desperate search of the subject that Jeff can "speak intelligently" about. We've thought of a few possibilities, such as:

A. The mating rituals of miniature marsupials
B. The refraction of ions in an excited state
C. Theoretical physics as applied by Wiley Coyote
D. The names of all the Brady kids

The correct answer will appear in future newsletters but my bet is on "D".
