The Hourglass August 24, 1998 A Publication of the Connecticut Grey Rugby Football Club FALL SCHEDULE ANNOUNCEMENT The fall schedule has been tentatively set at this time. The following is an almost complete listing of the games and locations with only minor holes to fill over the next few weeks.
There are still plans to possibly add more games in November if there is interest and the weather holds. The Family Day on Sept. 26th will be a picnic and round-robin event with hopefully one more team. Dean is trying to get Boston on the schedule for this - which is the easy part - getting them to come to the game is another story. Also, the round-robin in Worcester on Sept. 12th is a pseudo-memorial game for a Worcester player who committed suicide this past summer. Also, the off weekend over the Columbus day holiday includes the JoJo Moore festival hosted by White Plains on that Sunday. If there is enough interest and a decent assemblage for a team then we may decide to enter this event. As you can see some of the kickoff times have yet to be determined and that makes it imperative that you contact Joe Scan, Tom Flynn or Don Brancard with your game availability so they may be able to contact you if there is a slight change in plans. There are a lot of away games and it will be necessary for us to put the effort into making as many games as possible so that we don't try to limp through the year with the usual core of 12 to 13 players. This tends to take a real toll on some bodies that definitely reduces our fragile and questionable life-spans. SARANAC LAKE UPDATE Sounds like a pretty sedate weekend overall. Lots of games for the few who mustered the strength and courage to take on a usually strong over-40 bracket without a great deal of support from the club. However, the eight or so Greys that went to Saranac Lake and supported with a smattering of Boston players were able to come away with a respectable 2-2 record. Details are somewhat sketchy at this time (after all, it's been almost three weeks since the tournament ended). Tried to get recaps of the game for the newsletter and just to show you how bad people's memories are, Tom Flynn has us losing two and winning two but his memo to me has three losses and one win. Sandy was able to help plug the gaps in Tom's memory but not by much. From what I can gather, the Greys lost to Blackthorn but beat Binghamton, then beat a team called Medusa and lost a very close match to Syracuse. SUMMER INJURY REPORT One would generally expect to have some sort of casualties over the summer months but the recent trip to Saranac took its toll on Seegar. Fred has torn tendons and a broken foot that will keep him sidelined for the better part of the fall (like, until December). Not really sure if this was due to activity on the pitch or the after-hours shenanigans that follows Saturday's fun. Remember last year when Flynn suffered a severe case of water on the brain and Sandy Woodard consumed a near fatal dose of "Dumb N' Stupids" (dark and stormies) and Paul Jackson played for the Greys??? Yes, those are scary thoughts. ROCKCATS OUTING On August 9th, a large group of Greys and their families attended a picnic and ball game in New Britain to see the Rockcats. There were over 25 in attendance for the burgers, dogs and chicken dinner followed by the game. The heat of the day was the only real problem for the Greys as many didn't make it past the fourth inning before succumbing to the heat. The Rockcats fared much worse as they succumbed by the end of the third and wound up losing 16 - 7. Thanks to Ed Carr for taking the time to coordinate the affair and hope that we can do this again (with even more Greys) next year. AROUND THE FIELD Due to the long summer break there isn't much Grey matter to speak of. However, a few notable quotes were received from the Saranac weekend. Fred Seegar, walking on Saturday night with guest Ian Sankey's daughter (late teens early 20's) under his arm when it dawned on him that "things are getting pretty bad when you're hitting on your teammates daughters." It was best put when one Grey noted "and to think he's depriving a village somewhere of an idiot." After learning of the early Saturday morning kickoff for the first game at 8:00 a.m., Joe Scan noted that "It's not reasonable to ask men over 40 to play rugby before they take a shit!" And, word has it that Ian (now nicknamed Ian the Roosterman) Roberts kept many entertained with his rooster call. Not really amazing when you consider the facts
