The Hourglass March 21, 1998 A Publication of the Connecticut Grey Rugby Football Club 1997 ANNUAL AWARDS BANQUET The 1997 AAB was held on Saturday evening, February 21st at Beckley's in Berlin, Connecticut. Although lightly attended by the Grey membership, the evening was the usual good time with excellent food, good drinks and even some dancing this year. The highlight of the evening was the announcements of the recipients of the 1997 awards. This year's winners are as follows:
Congratulations to all award winners especially the double dipper - Ed Carr (both well deserved awards). There were also several honorably mentioned mementos to a few selected and noteworthy individuals. 1998 SPRING SCHEDULE Probably the second most important announcement for this newsletter is the semi-finalized schedule for this Spring. The schedule is as follows:
As you can see, this is a very competitive schedule and it will require a good number of core Greys to be able to compete at strength for each game. Although most of these games are at home, this has not provided us the clear advantages as has been the case in the past. Also, there are two possible scenarios for the May 30th Saturday. Presently we have confirmed with White Plains for a home game. We have also learned that this is the Connecticut Cup day and they are looking for an Old Boys game against a select few Old Yankees. We may try to get a four team tournament to be held during the Cup and take part in the festivities at the Yankees Clubhouse. More to follow. For those going to the Easter Tournament in Baltimore, please contact Tom Flynn, Don Brancard or Joe Scan regarding your availability and desire to play. Also, that is not a mis-print on March 28th. We have made this somewhat of a ritual under the tutelage of former Captain Carr. It is a good chance to see which body parts, functions and physiological processes still work - and more importantly - don't work after the winter break. This takes into account that elbow bending and chewing are those activities which we take for granted work just fine. We hope to have the practice held at 12:00 noon and training will be immediately followed by pints at Kenny G's. Special thanks to Dean (Bangers) Jorgensen for his stellar match making ability. LOU P - "DADDY" Nope, it's not "Grandpa Lou" just plain "Daddy Lou." Our congratulations to Lou Petruzello and his wife Debbie who recently had a son. Specifics on the bouncing bundle aren't available at this time, however, we do believe the newborn exhibited a four day growth at birth. According to Flynn - Lou will fit in just great with the Worcester RFC a.k.a. the "New Daddy Club" in Franconia. FIVE NATIONS UPDATE For those of you who are really interested in the outcomes of this tournament, we have for you the following scores to-date:
Remaining Games
It looks as if France will be the 5 Nations champ in 1998 with some still believing Ireland (winless) still has a chance. Goes to show you what happens when you drink too much when the tournament is on. Also we heard that Bud Harvey is routing for New Zealand. History and Geography lessons to follow. E-MAIL ADDRESSES WANTED Many members have supplied the Editor with their e-mail addresses which makes the timely receipt of the newsletter possible and, saves us 32 cents with each address on each newsletter. If you have an e-mail address and wish to receive this very important information with the click of your fingers, please send it to me at johnsaw@nu.com.
